Scottsdale Pavillions Car Show
June 18th, 2005
(Trip Report & Photos by Dean Hathaway)
As usual in June in Phoenix, it was too damn hot to do anything strenuous. So, we made one of our approximately bi-annual trips to the Scottsdale Pavillions Car Show. This is a free show that anyone can attend as a spectator or exhibitor at no charge.
The Surprising thing about this show is that it is as large as it is and that it draws so many rare and high-dollar rigs.
When we bring our old Broncos out here to sit in the same lot with Panteras, Shelbys and many classic muscle cars and antiques, you might be surprised how much interest and appreciation the old boxy Broncos attact.
Dwight Smith left his Bronco at home this time, but brought out his big, recently custom painted, Honda six banger. We were in the row next to the Motorcycle section and Dwight was right behind us.
If you used to watch the old British TV show, "The Prisoner", you might recognize the first little car above as the same type that the protagonist of that show drove. Originally they were made by Lotus, but then the tools, parts, and production rights were signed over to their largest dealer and the car became the "Caterham 7".
The variety of vehicles you might see at this show on any given Saturday is astounding
.
A new surprise for me was seeing a Mercedes Gull Wing Coupe here. These cars are very, very valuable. This one had just been imported from England, and the word was that it was an unrestored original! Also, I heard later that that first car above, the Yellow Pantera, belongs to our own Shad Bruce. If I'd know that I'd have hit him up for all the info on the car (and maybe a test drive!).
Among the other unusual items sighted this trip was the first Continental Kit I've ever seen on a bicycle!
Snakes, cats, and horses living together! What can this mean?
When it was time to go home Mark Rippon needed a hand getting his Bronco back on the trailer, since it had a dead battery and the fuel system wasn't all there. Tim Bowsher rolled out a tow strap and pulled him around to the back of the movie theater and right up onto his trailer with out much drama or difficulty.
A Saturday afternoon and evening spent at the Scottsdale Pavillions Car Show is always a fun and entertaining experience. It's a great alternative run in those times when it's not very desirable or practical to hit the trails.
